On November 29, 2023, Judge Timothy Lane was appointed to the Gilpin County Court in the 1st Judicial District. He stands for retention in 2026 following a two-year provisional term. Described by his peers as a sound addition to the bench, Judge Lane is known to be a neutral arbiter, thoughtful and deliberate in his decision-making, knowledgeable in the law, and well regarded for setting high standards around preparedness and acting ethically. Civil and small claims cases make up the remaining docket (25 percent). The Commission’s performance evaluation process began with observations of Judge Lane in court and continued with the review of survey responses from non-attorneys, jurors and court staff. Feedback from the chief judge of the 1st Judicial District, prosecutors, and public defenders was considered, and commissioners conducted an in-person interview with Judge Lane. Individuals who completed surveys were asked questions involving case management, application and knowledge of law, communications, demeanor, diligence, and fairness. Judge Lane scored above average among those surveyed. Judge Lane was transparent with commissioners when asked to identify aspects of his job that warrant improvement. He noted his desire to develop additional expertise in civil law and civil procedure. Overall, the Commission is very pleased with Judge Lane’s performance. He is a dedicated jurist who has brought efficiency to the courtroom, a passion for staying current in evolving areas of the law, and a measure of consistency for the Gilpin County community.
